So much work in genealogy is about looking backward and trying to make sense of whatever history, stories, family anecdotes — are receding into the rearview mirror. For these family history narratives, we are attempting to look forward into the future — to a future that we know we will not be a part of someday. We are creating and crafting a resource for the benefit of future generations. Susan lives in Chesapeake, Virginia and Thomas lives Lisbon, Portugal.

  1. Hi, your blog on The Bond Family is truly amazing! I am originally from Fairfax County VA and grew up with the History of VA taught in school, and have also grown up with the family history of Godfrey Ragsdale I, b. 1615, Nottinghamshire, England. He immigrated to the Jamestown Colony about 1620, subsequently died, with his wife Mary, in the April 18 1644 massacre by Chief Opencanough of the Pawmunkey Indian tribe in this region, their only child, Godfrey Ragsdale, II, b. 1643, was able to survive thanks to his mother who stowed him away under the family cabin in a covered crib/basket. The Ragsdale Family has been researched extensively from the 1960’s to present, and one of Godfrey II’s descendants, Michael Ragsdale, b. circa 1780, Halifax VA, married a young lady named Bond. Our family records show she was born in SC, about 1781-86, her name was: Emilia, a/ka Milley, or ‘Mealey’ Bond. The young Ragsdale/Bond family bought and sold land with a Charles Wright Bond in VA and GA, specifically Franklin GA during the Cherokee Land Lottery. Information found on Ancestry shows Charles Wright Bond was a Sheriff in Franklin County GA in the 1800s for many years. In short, I have been unable to locate the lineage of the woman named Milley Bond. The records from a family bible shows that she and Michael were married in 1807, no location, but believe they were living in GA by that time. The same bible record shows there was a child named Amelia born about 1804, who died very young, and subsequently another Amelia was born about 1823 to this couple. I did find a record on Ancestry showing an Amelia Bond, [possibly Milley’s mother?] d. 1804-05, in Isle of Wight VA, but other records are inconclusive [my calculation was if Milley was born about 1781, Amelia would have been born 15-20 years prior, so her birth 1760-65 . I have searched the town, Isle of Wight, which is on the Chesapeake Bay, and the area has many Bond descendants, so, my question is: does your branch of the Bonds have connections to the Isle of Wight, VA, or is there an Amelia Bond in this family tree that you may be aware of? The only substantial record of my relative Milley Bond is a family grave marker in Banks County GA where the Michael/Milley Ragsdale family homestead was. There is one reference in a family narrative about her talking about her brothers: Leonard, George, and Micajah [Micah?], but have not been able to establish a link between the alleged Bond siblings. Any information would be greatly appreciated to fill in Milley’s missing ancestors! Thank you so much for the work that you have done, I am so impressed!
